» For those new to massage . . .
Getting a massage for the first time can be a bit daunting, but never fear; if you’re like most people, it won’t be long before it’s harder to get you off the massage table than to get you on one!
The first question those new to massage inevitably ask is “do I have to remove my clothes?” The short answer is “no.” In fact, read this chair massage article to find out how to get a 15 or 30-minute session while seated in a special chair (and fully clothed) to either get a familiarization with massage or choose this method regularly, in achieving relief from neck, upper and lower back, arm and hand pain. You may also choose to remain clothed while on the massage table – our clients’ preferences, whether it is pressure applied, temperature of the room, or your wish to remain clothed, are always respected. An important note for those of you concerned about the clothing issue: We are required by law to practice very particular draping (covering) techniques to ensure that the area being massaged is the ONLY area exposed.
If you decide to have a massage while draped, here’s what you can expect: On-Site Associates’ massage tables are made up just like a bed would be. There is a bottom sheet, a top sheet, and for those who like it warm and cozy, the tables are heated and a blanket provided. Linens are changed between each client, and proper hygiene is strictly practiced. Following the requirements of our regulating agency, the Texas Dept. of Health Services, only the area being massaged is undraped. For instance, if your leg is being massaged, the sheet is safely tucked in to make sure only that leg is exposed. When we complete therapy on that area, you are covered up again and the next area is undraped.
On-Site Associates is proud to boast a group of therapists highly educated (educated beyond the minimum requirements for becoming a therapist in Texas) and with a wide array of specialties. Some of these specialties incorporate muscle specific techniques (as opposed to general massage over an area) that to some, would feel inappropriate or intrusive (explained below). However, the client has complete say as to whether they wish the therapist to use these techniques or not. For instance, if you’re having numbness and tingling in one or both hands, one of the muscle specific techniques used is to massage the upper chest (pectoral) musculature. This is because the pectoral muscles can compress the nerves which go down to the hand. While pressure is in no way applied to breast tissue, it is close to the breast area. You would first be educated as to the purpose of the technique, and then would be asked permission to perform that technique.
When you arrive for your first session, your therapist will have you complete a short health questionnaire. It is important that, although we do not diagnose, prescribe, or have the education of a physician, we have your complete medical history to be sure what we do is appropriate for you. If you are concerned about a particular health condition and whether it is conducive to massage therapy, we welcome you to contact us to arrange for a phone consultation.
We use massage creams, lotions, and oils, depending on the type of massage you receive. Clients may choose to have a product with or without scent. Whether your objective is to relax from the stresses of life, or to get relief from chronic or acute pain, On-Site Associates can be your one stop therapy shop. We would love to help you feel better and enhance your quality of life!
